WELCOME TO OVAL MUSIC EDITION

SHEET MUSIC FOR STARTER STRING PLAYERS

Oval Music Edition was created in 1995 by Julian Carlick. It was inspired through his teaching,  and working with young people playing in their first string ensemble. There are two sorts of publications, tutor books and  ensemble pieces.   The Tutor books are called Collections. They are  for Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. They can be used together for all the instruments or separately, and for individual or group lessons .

The tutor books of pieces start at the first lesson. The complete book of  87 pieces is divided into 8 volumes,  called Collections,  with an extra ninth Collection for scales alone. Every piece has keyboard and/or stringed instrument accompaniment for the teacher or friend.

There are  17 ensemble pieces in the Tutti Strings series. To encourage beginners to join in as soon as possible in ensemble playing, each instrument has three parts, Open Strings, Easy and Main parts. All are available to download or order hard copies by email to ovalmusicedition@ovalmusicedition.org

About the Tutor Books - The Pedagogy

  • The style of the music is intended to be timeless. The emphasis is on originally-composed, harmonious pieces which reflect the experiences of young people. Some old favourite traditional tunes are included.
  • The music depicts real world activities as well as fantasies. At the start, the Flower Collection explores our natural surroundings, leading on to the final, Daily Collection, which looks at more practical situations such as  losing house keys and getting stuck in traffic jams.
  • The aim is to stimulate the imagination by exploring the free and abstract nature of music,  through learning a stringed instrument.
  • Technical information about how to play the instruments is entirely left to the teacher.
  • What is provided is a  journey, based on  fun and discovery. There should be enough material to allow students to explore new music on their own,  beyond that which formal lessons can always include.
  • The accompaniment music is meant to be as enjoyable for the teacher to play alone,  as for the students to play with!
